Cana study

Why Cana is not permission to drink

Cana is not treated here as a stand-alone permission slip for Christians to drink alcohol.

Quick answer

We do not use Cana as blanket permission to drink alcohol. Even if someone insists on reading John 2 differently from us, the larger biblical pattern on sober-mindedness, stumbling, and judgment would still have to be faced.

Why one story cannot cancel a larger pattern

Our concern is not only what happened at Cana. Our concern is what the whole Bible presents as consistent with holiness, sober judgment, and love for neighbor. That is why this page points back to Is drinking alcohol biblical? and Romans 14:21. It is also important to understand the broader definition of wine and also read did Jesus make alcohol.

How we use Cana instead

We treat Cana as a passage that must be read consistently with Christ’s character and the broader wine study. We do not treat it as a permission slip that erases the Bible’s warning language.

Frequently asked questions

Do we think Cana is irrelevant?

No. We think it is important, but not in isolation from the rest of Scripture.

Which page should I read with this one?

Read it together with Good wine at Cana and the main pillar Did Jesus make alcohol?.
