Good wine at Cana

The phrase “good wine” in John 2 does not settle the question by itself through an alcohol-first assumption.

Quick answer

We do not think the phrase “good wine” automatically means alcoholic wine. The phrase tells us the wine was excellent. It does not by itself tell us that Jesus supplied intoxicating drink.

John 2:9-10

The key question is not whether the wine was good. The key question is what kind of wine a sinless Christ would provide.

Why the usual argument fails

The common argument runs like this: the ruler of the feast calls it good wine, therefore it was alcoholic, therefore Cana approves drinking. We reject each jump in that chain. Quality language is not the same thing as alcohol language, and a single assumption about Cana should not overrule the Bible’s broader warning pattern.
