The passage
Proverbs 31:4-5 warns, “It is not for kings... to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.” We read the heart of the warning in what follows the drinking: forgotten law and perverted judgment.
Proverbs 31:4-5
This is one of our strongest passages because it links wine directly with failed judgment.
Why this is a judgment text
We do not use this verse mainly to make a medical point. The Bible verse makes a moral and interpretive point: wine is being discussed in connection with leadership, discernment, and justice. That keeps sober-mindedness near the center of the debate.
Why we do not isolate the warning to rulers alone
Rulers are named because they carry visible responsibility, but we read the principle more broadly. If wine threatens judgment in those entrusted with public justice, it is reasonable to let that warning shape the broader question of Christian sobriety as well. That is why this page is read beside Leviticus 10:9-10 and Sober-minded verses.

Frequently asked questions
Does this verse mean every believer is a king here?
No. We are not collapsing roles, although it does state in Revelation 1:5-7; 5:9-11 "And hath made us kings and priests unto God". Proverbs 31:4-5 is drawing out the principle that wine is warned against where clear judgment matters most.
Why pair this verse with sober-minded verses?
Because we read a shared concern: clear judgment, restraint, and moral steadiness rather than impairment.
